Winterize
After draining your system, the best thing is to have it winterized or blown out by a sprinkler contractor. Most residential air compressors are not strong enough to properly blow out the lines. A commercial-sized compressor is hooked up to the drain or the backflow preventer and air pushes water out through each sprinkler head. If not done properly the manifold and backflow could be damaged.
Once the system has been blown out it should not be turned on until the Spring. During warm periods in the Winter just water by hose, or else you run the risk of ruining your investment.
